I’ve been a Green Lantern fan for as long as I remember. The creativity involved with his powers is incredible. Whether it is because I am a GL fan, like comics in general, or it is just the latest water cooler talk, I have been asked a few times if I heard the news about Green Lantern.
You know, the latest BIG news.
The big news that DC is making him gay.
Of course, many news stories have no clue to which Green Lantern they are referring. News flash: it is a parallel universe Green Lantern Alan Scott that is coming out of the closet, not the Hal Jordan GL you watched in the movies.
If you are pondering whether you should drop the comic or not like Green Lantern anymore because of it, consider this: how long has Hal Jordan been depicted as a fornicator in the comic books? Did Hal’s illicit activity cause you to stop reading the comics, watch the movie or keep your kids from watching the cartoon? If we are going to object to Green Lantern based on morals, then we should have objected to him all along, as well as Bruce Wayne/Bat Man, Captain America, Iron Man, etc. The Bible has much to say about fornication, and none of it is nice. If you have issues with Green Lantern based on morality and the Bible, then you should have had issues with him all along.
I point to Jesus as the moral compass and moral teacher for my children, not comic books or movies. If we did not make a big whoop-de-doo about Green Lantern’s morals until now, then how alarmed were we about morality to begin with?
